Six Special Words

Hey everyone,

We are launching a new writing competition now. This time the challenge is to write a short story in six words just like Ernest Hemingway. The prize for the best story is a Kindle. We would like you to give a background to your short story as well. The deadline is the 15th of May.

The story of Hemingway's famous six words usually features him writing it as the result of a wager between him and other writers. While lunching with friends at a restaurant, Hemingway bets the table ten dollars each that he can craft an entire story in six words. He writes "For sale: baby shoes, never worn" and collects his winnings.

Here are some other examples from students in our school to help inspire you:

"New World, jet plane. Bye Mom."

"New me. Old you, things change."

"A man. Struggle survivor. Freedom fighter."

This next story is about an Irish man who left for England in search of work. He came from a large, loving family but he never returned to Ireland. He was in a strange, new country and missed his loving family in Ireland. He started his own family in England and they filled the loneliness in his heart. He was diagnosed with cancer but he didn't tell his family because he didn't want them to worry. A few years later when he was an old man he woke up in the middle of the night and felt that he was to die soon. He got up, polished his shoes and put on his best suit. He sat in the living room and lit a cigarette. He put his old dog in his lap and died that night, peacefully.

"Old Man. Sunday best. God waits."
